Max Wetzel, a seasoned veteran in the restaurant industry known for steering growth at major quick service brands, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Wetzel takes over CEO duties from Charles Watson, who stepped down after 16 years of transformative leadership, including six years as CEO.
This transition marks an exciting chapter for the brand as it continues to expand its footprint and innovate within the industry.

Max Wetzel’s extensive background includes his recent role as CEO of CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc. (parent of Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s®), where he managed over 3,700 restaurants globally.

Prior to this, Wetzel was the Chief Operating Officer at Papa John’s International, Inc., further honing his expertise in franchise operations and brand growth.

In addition to Wetzel’s appointment, the company has welcomed Roland C. Smith to its board of directors. Smith brings over 25 years of leadership experience from top restaurant, retail, and consumer brands, promising to further strengthen the company’s strategic direction.
Roland C. Smith’s impressive career includes leadership roles at Delhaize America, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, and Office Depot, among others. His strategic insight will be invaluable as Tropical Smoothie Cafe continues to expand.
