I was talking to my friend Barney last week . He’s very knowledgeable about the food industry, and is one of very few people I know in franchising who, like me, actually worked in food-service.
Now, when I say “worked in food service,” in Barney’s case, he was an Owner. Barney owned several food concessions at a major university. Me-I wasn’t a food-service business Owner. Instead, I was in management, and was even a Maitre’D in Las Vegas, years ago.
Back to pizza. And, some of the franchising trends related to it.
Franchise Trends: Is Pizza Getting Hot Again?
Barney, (during a phone call we were having about something else at the time) told me to start keeping my eye on pizza, and what some of the pizza restaurants in the franchise sector were doing.
He told me about the “Gourmet” pizza craze that was starting to develop.
As Barney was sharing his excitement about “Gourmet” pizza, I was thinking to myself, “really?”
Like gourmet pizza was something new.
Well, surprise, surprise. Gourmet pizza is hot. Again.
But, why?

CNBC Says So. That’s Why Gourmet Pizza is Hot
Right after Barney and I talked, an article about pizza franchising appeared-almost magically, on the CNBC website.
I like CNBC.com a lot. Their editors helped me promote my hardcover franchise book on their top-rated website.
CNBC Bonus– My friend and part-time mentor can be seen on CNBC-TV after the closing bell.
Back to pizza. Again.

“Consumers want better food, but they still want it quickly. That’s makes fast-casual pizza a compelling proposition for franchises. Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wings and Smashburger are among the existing fast-casual chains investing in the pizza concept.”
So, that’s why gourmet pizza is not only making a comeback, but is now the focus of several pizza and even non-pizza franchises?
Ooookay.
There may be another reason. Boredom.
North American consumers may be getting sick of burger and fries.
(Although franchise chains like 5 Guys are as busy as ever.)
I Guess Gourmet Pizza Is Hot
If Barney says it’s hot-it must be.
If the editors over at CNBC.com just spent the time putting together this wonderful pizza franchise slideshow, well…damn-gourmet pizza must be hot-or at least worth a look.
Right?
