My Review Of The Impact Equation

business book review of the impact equation

(Disclosure: My friend, Chris Brogan, had his publisher send me a free advance copy of The Impact Equation.)

From the 1st page of the new business book from Chris Brogan and Julien Smith:

It takes about 6 years for an apple tree to grow from a seed into an apple tree.” – Brett Rogers

That’s how The Impact Equation starts out.

I remember reading somewhere that it took co-author Chris Brogan about 8 years to reach his first 100 readers. Now, part of the reason for that has to do with the fact that Chris was blogging way before most of us. The other part…

It takes a while to build a powerful platform.

And, in the “instant” society we live in, frustration can set in early for those that are struggling to build their platforms. I experience it myself, although my platform is growing.

You Are A Media Creator

According to co-author Julien Smith, “We are perhaps the first generation who are not only mass consumers of media in multiple formats, but also mass creators of media.”

Chris and Julien advocate that you need to accept your role as a media creator. One only has to look at this business video…produced on the spur of the moment, to understand.

Chris, (the media creator) had a business question, so he reached out to someone he trusted to get an answer, and in his usual helpful way, made sure that others who may have had the same question had the ability to learn what he learned.

You can do the same thing.

How cool is that?

The Impact Equation: Are You Making Things Happen or Just Making Noise?

Exposure

You need some.

According to the authors, “The magic trick of all magic tricks is to be there before anyone even knows who you are.” They suggest that you position yourself as the go-to resource in whatever space you’re attempting to enter. And, being there early-or even first, can have a huge Impact.

There are lots of great tips in this book, like the one I just shared.

And, there’s a nice mix of tips; some are targeted towards people that are in learning mode, while others are for people that have been building their online (and offline) presence for a while.

In summation;

  • This book is about building a powerful platform. (Correctly)
  • It’s about getting maximum exposure.
  • It’s about becoming relevant in your space.
  • It’s about creating a community.
  • It’s about doing business in an ever-changing world.

You should grab it.

We Visited A Franchise Expo
My wife and I are interested in starting a business so we visited a franchise expo. Afterwards, we were contacted by a couple of franchisors and we soon found ourselves deeply immersed in researching these particular franchises. We needed to take a step back and take stock of the bigger picture: 'Is a franchise right for us? Right now? What types of franchises would suit us?' We needed an independent and knowledgeable perspective. A paid consultation with Joel Libava clarified some of our thinking and gave us some useful ideas to pursue!" "
