Before You Buy a Franchise With Your Spouse, Read This (Yes, Both of You)

buying a franchise with a spouse image

Buying a franchise with your spouse sounds romantic. Two people. One dream. A shared grand opening photo.

Then reality shows up. One of you is picking paint colors. The other is asking about the personal guarantee and other things legal. Talk about uncomfortable. I’ve seen this happen many times right before my very own eyes.

So if you’re thinking about buying a franchise with your spouse, start by reading this post.

Do this part right, and the rest gets a whole lot easier. I promise.

Key Takeaways

Buying a franchise as a couple is a bigger decision than buying one alone. Why?

Because two people share one household and one pile of money on the line. Both of you need to do the homework, not just the one who got excited at the expo. Settle your money limits, your roles, and your exit plan before you talk to a franchisor. Then research together. Do that and you will make a better decision. You might even stay married. 🙂

Two People. One Dream. Zero Agreement on the Details.

I recently wrote a post for Franchise Direct called Running a Franchise Together as a Husband-and-Wife Team. It covers roles, boundaries, and money talks once the doors are open.

But the trouble often starts earlier. It starts while you’re still shopping.

The fact is, one of you is usually more excited. That spouse has already picked the paint colors and designed the grand opening banner. The other is quietly asking, “Wait, how much is this going to cost?”

In my experience, both reactions are normal. Neither one is wrong. But if you don’t deal with the gap early, it will show up later. Usually at the worst possible time.

When it Comes to Buying a Franchise With Your Spouse, The Franchise Salesperson Knows Which One of You Is Excited

Here’s something nobody tells you at the Discovery Day buffet.

A franchise salesperson is trained to read the room. They know who’s nodding. They know who’s checking the exit. And they will spend most of their time with the “nodder.”

That’s their job. It’s not your job to make it easy.

So go to Discovery Day together. Sit together. Take separate notes. Compare them in the car. If your notes don’t match, that’s useful information.

Both of You Make the Validation Calls

Calling current franchisees is the best research you can do. Both of you should be on those calls, or at least both on the list of people who make them. Why?

Because two people hear different things.

One hears the numbers. The other hears the tone. One notices what the franchisee said. The other notices what they didn’t say.

As you probably know, you get the list of current and former franchisees from the Franchise Disclosure Document. Call more than a few. Call the former franchisees too. Ask the same questions each time so you can compare answers.

Fact: Under the FTC Franchise Rule, a franchisor must give you the FDD at least 14 calendar days before you sign a binding agreement or pay any money. Use every one of those days. Read it together. Then have an experienced franchise attorney read it too.

Ask About the Personal Guarantee Early

This one surprises couples.

Many franchisors ask for a personal guarantee. Some ask the spouse to sign as well. That means your house, your savings, and your retirement accounts can be part of the deal.

As I wrote in the Franchise Direct post, your money is on the line twice. The guarantee is one of the main ways that happens. Find out what the franchisor requires before you fall in love with the brand. Not after.

Five Questions to Answer Before You Talk to Any Franchisor

These are different from the ones in my Franchise Direct post. They’re about the buying decision itself.

  1. What is our number? How much can we lose without losing the house?
  2. Does one of us keep a paycheck job? If so, for how long?
  3. Who has veto power on the final decision? (Hint: “whoever is more stubborn” is not an answer.)
  4. What does a normal Tuesday look like for each of us in this business?
  5. What would make us walk away, even after we’ve paid a deposit?

If you can’t answer these yet, that’s fine. Slow down. The franchise will still be there. If it isn’t, it probably wasn’t the right one anyway.

The Bottom Line

Buying then owning a franchise with your spouse can work well. Plenty of couples pull it off.

But the smart ones do the hard talking first. They agree on money limits. They research as a team. They read the FDD slowly and ask uncomfortable questions. And they never let a salesperson get between them.

Your spouse is not a vendor. Don’t negotiate like one. Be honest, do the due diligence, and protect both the investment and the marriage.

Want a second set of eyes before you sign anything? I work with buyers and couples one on one. I don’t take commissions from franchisors, so my advice is on your side of the table. Book a consultation or take a look at my Franchise Evaluation Reports.
