The Franchise King®

Begin Here: Your Franchise Buying Journey Starts on This Page

You found this website for a reason.

Maybe you’re tired of working for someone else. Maybe you’ve been downsized or got a buyout offer. Maybe you’ve been dreaming about owning a business for years and this feels like the time to do it.

Whatever brought you here, welcome.

I’m Joel Libava, The Franchise King®. For over 25 years, I’ve helped people just like you figure out if franchise ownership is right for them. And just as importantly, if it’s not.

Fact: I don’t sell franchises. I don’t collect brokerage commissions from franchisors. I work for franchise buyers. Only franchise buyers.

That means the advice on this page, and everywhere else on this website, has one goal. To help you make a smart, informed, fact-based decision about buying a franchise.

This page is your roadmap. Follow it in order, and you’ll be miles ahead of most franchise buyers.

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Find Out If Franchise Ownership Is Right for You

Here’s some straight talk. Franchise ownership isn’t for everyone. In fact, it’s not for most people.

Franchising is rule-based. You’ll be following someone else’s system, paying royalties every month, and working harder than you probably expect. For the right person, that’s a fair trade. For the wrong person, it’s a nightmare.

So before you look at a single franchise opportunity, look at yourself.

Start with my free Franchise Compatibility Quiz. It takes a few minutes, and it will tell you a lot about whether you’re wired for franchise ownership.

Then read How To Buy a Franchise: The Ultimate Guide. It walks you through the entire process, step by step. Bookmark it. You’ll come back to it.

Want to understand the business model itself first? Read How Franchising Works.

Step 2: Get Real About the Money

Buying a franchise takes money. More than most people think.

There’s the franchise fee. Then equipment, inventory, build-out costs, marketing fees, and monthly royalties. Plus you’ll need 6-12 months of working capital, and money to live on while your business grows.

Fact: Undercapitalization is one of the top reasons new franchise owners fail.

So do this before anything else. Use my free Net Worth Calculator and other franchise calculators to get a clear picture of where you stand financially.

And don’t get hung up on the franchise fee alone. Here’s why the franchise fee shouldn’t be your focus.

When you’re ready to explore financing, my state-by-state SBA Preferred Lender List is a great place to start.

Step 3: Explore Franchise Opportunities

Now the fun part. Finding franchises worth looking at.

Browse my Find a Franchise section for ideas, opportunities, and honest takes on different franchise types.

Want a curated list? Check out The Top 17 Franchises to Consider Owning in 2026. It includes a few hidden gems most buyers never hear about.

And to understand where the industry is heading, read The Top 10 Franchise Trends That Will Define 2026.

One warning as you explore. Be skeptical of anyone who promises easy money or “semi-absentee” ownership. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Step 4: Research Like Your Money Depends on It (Because It Does)

This is the most important step on this page. Period.

Great franchise research is what separates happy franchise owners from people who lose their life savings. It’s not difficult. But it takes time and discipline.

Start with my Franchise Research section. It’s packed with practical, proven research techniques.

Then dig into these three essentials:

The Franchise Disclosure Document is your best friend in this process. Learn what the 23 items in a FDD are and what to look for in each one.

Talking to current franchisees is your single best source of inside information. Here are the essential questions to ask franchisees before you invest a dime.

And before you visit franchise headquarters, read my Discovery Day secrets. Better yet, grab my free Franchise Discovery Day Survival Guide. The signup box is right on my homepage.

Want the complete, step-by-step system? My Definitive Guide to Franchise Research shows you exactly how to research any franchise opportunity, in order, with nothing left out.

Step 5: Protect Yourself Legally

I’m going to be blunt here.

Never, ever sign a franchise agreement without having a franchise attorney review it first. Not a general business lawyer. A franchise attorney.

Don’t believe me? Read The Risks and Consequences of Not Hiring a Franchise Attorney. Then read Do You Need a Franchise Lawyer? for good measure.

Fact: The few thousand dollars you spend on a franchise attorney is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy.

When you’re ready to find one, use my Franchise Attorney Directory. Every attorney listed focuses on franchise law.

One more thing. If a franchisor or salesperson makes claims about how much money you’ll make, read this first: Franchise Earnings Claims. Verify everything.

Step 6: Get an Expert in Your Corner

You’ve done the self-assessment. You’ve run the numbers. You’ve found a franchise you like and started your research.

Now what?

If you want an experienced, unbiased set of eyes on the franchise you’re considering, that’s exactly what I do.

My Unbiased Franchise Evaluations give you my honest, no-punches-pulled take on the specific franchise you want to buy. The pros. The cons. The red flags. My expert opinion, in writing.

Want ongoing guidance through the entire process? Check out my advisory services and see how I’m different from franchise brokers and consultants who get paid by franchisors.

Don’t just take my word for it. Read what my clients say. There are 78+ testimonials there.

The Bottom Line

Buying a franchise could be one of the best decisions you ever make. Or one of the most expensive mistakes.

The difference comes down to preparation. Honest self-assessment. Real financial clarity. Thorough research. Professional legal help. And facts over emotions, every single time.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. Everything you need to start your franchise buying journey the right way is on this page and throughout this website.

Take your time. Do the work. Ask the tough questions.

And if you want my help along the way, I’m right here.

Now get started.
